The beginning of May is celebrated with the International Worker's Day
here in Germany on May 1st.
International Workers' Day (also known as May Day) is a celebration of the international labour movement and left-wing movements. It commonly sees organized street demonstrations and marches by working people and their labour unions throughout most of the world. May 1 is a national holiday in more than 80 countries. It is also celebrated unofficially in many other countries. [via Wikipedia]
So, last night the whole village (except for me, I had an upset stomach) gathered around the market place to celebrate and have fun. A decorated tree is always put up by all the towns around here and the children play little tricks on people, like wrapping something around their house in toilet paper, ringing their door bells and then hiding from them, some leave chalk marks on the streets etc.
Then during the night from April 30th to May 1st the younger members of the fire department always keep watch over the tree, because not only the kids play tricks on others, but the different villages and towns try to cut down the May trees of the other towns, to win the contest of which town has the best looking, best decorated May tree. That contest always takes place and the winner is then announced big time in the newspapers.
For me it's just an awesome day off. Period. Nothing more, nothing less. Let them have their fun. Leonie had a great time running around our village with the other kids, ringing people's door bells and sneaking around. I remember I used to love that as a kid, so why not!
Have a wonderful 1st May - April was a good one, may May (see what I did there, haha) be even better! Don't forget to say hi to my amazing sponsors and be prepared for a wonderful month!
